Ranger & the Spirit of Reiki
On December 21, 2006, I had the privilege of offering Reiki to Ranger, a two and a half year old German Shephard who presented symptoms of lymphoma. His owner, a Reiki Master in his own right, had had many Reiki sessions with him for months prior. This time, however, Kimball needed to be out of town and was worried that Ranger might pass away at the kennel before he returned home. I offered to step in and saw him 5 times in the next 2 weeks. Due to the fabulous being of this dog, a seasoned recipient of the Reiki energy, he gave me unforgettable experiences, a few of which I am sharing here with Kimball's permission and support.
The kennel owner is a friend of mine and graciously offered Ranger and I private, quiet areas to have our sessions. Ranger didn't know me well, so I sat quietly on a stool, extending my hands outward. As the energy started to flow, Ranger, who was scurrying around the room, laid down with his head up looking at me from about two and a half feet away. We gazed at each other for a while. I invited him to take as much energy as he was comfortable with. When I invoked the power symbol, he laid his head down, looking away from me. The session lasted about ten minutes. Then I felt the energy withdraw, gradually towards my hands, seemingly receding back to the source. At the very second that the flow stopped, Ranger stood up.
Two days later, at our next session, he laid down in front of me, about a foot away. I did some hands-on, on either side of the bag around his neck holding the growths and fluid. He got all dreamy-looking. It was very sweet. He was ready for a big nap at the end.
On the 27th, Ranger was playful and excited, although I heard he hadn't eaten much the day before. He laid down across my feet today. The energy flowed, undulating. Even through many distractions, Ranger lay there taking it all in, for about half an hour. He seemed to want more and more. When I was done, he put his head on my foot and was content to lie there, dreamy-eyed, with puddles of drool on the floor.

December 30th, and Ranger was playful again today. He lay down at my feet. It was a busy and noisy day, and he seemed oblivious to it. At one point, when using the symbols, I was going very deeply into it. All of a sudden I got scared. At that moment, Ranger, who had had his back to me, turned his head around and licked my face 3 times, reassuringly.
New Year's Day, 2007, was the last time I saw Ranger. He was very excited and playful and kept scooting his huge body in and out between my legs. He was alert and curious about everything. When he settled down for our session, he lay there facing me contentedly, his left paw on my right shoe. The energy was strong and he lay there peacefully taking it all in, for about half an hour, his eyes half open as if in a trance. Then he happily went back to his kennel, leaving peaceful drool where he had laid his head.
On the way home, I said prayers of thanks for being given the opportunity to know such a remarkable animal. His spirit filled me with joy.
We used to say that the sack under his neck was like a Santa's beard (especially given the time of year). Now it has receded and decreased to the size of a softball and does not hang heavily. I couldn't feel any lumps inside of it and it didn't seem tender to the touch. The sack used to protrude on either side of his neck when he lay down, like a cushion. Now his chin rests normally on the floor when lying down.
Ranger continued doing well and did pass away, at home, months later. Reiki does not always cure what we perceive as disease. It does however vastly improve quality of life, even during illness. |
