A Testament to the Healing Power of Reiki

At 9:30 on a Friday morning in March 2008, I discovered what I thought to be the body of a very dead little mouse lying on its side, on the carpet in front of the woodstove. The four cats at large in the house all night, saw to his demise. I was sure of it. However, as I picked him up by the tail, he wriggled his body in seeming discomfort.

I put him in a cloth, lay a large jar on its side and placed him inside. Under some lights for warmth, I allowed Reiki to flow, hoping that if he didn't recover, perhaps death would be hastened. At the very least, I hoped his pain would be lessened. He shivered and shuttered and buried his head in the fabric and laid still.

Every so often for the next few hours, I'd peek in at the motionless body. By 3:30, I realized it had been quite a while since I checked in and when I did, I found him lying on his stomach on the cold bathroom floor, having left the jar and apparently fallen off the counter. Upon picking him up, I saw his face and extremities were pure white, instead of the bright pink that they had been. With a gentle touch, I stroked his back with my finger. This resulted in him raising his head and opening his mouth in a painful cry. And it didn't appear that he had control of his limbs.

I wrapped him in his cloth and brought him out to the desk where I was working and put him under the warmth of the desk lamp. I emailed my friend Sue, asking if she knew a humane, non-violent way to end his suffering, if indeed the second course of Reiki didn't help, what I now thought was a hopeless situation.

Once again I let Reiki flow. He shivered and shuddered again under the cloth. I returned to my typing, noticing his movement continue and then finally stop. After a few minutes, fully expecting this little creature to have passed away, I lifted the cloth. To my amazement, he climbed right up onto my fingers and began nibbling on one of them. I rushed to get him some bits of cheese and crackers and was thrilled when he welcomed the food with enthusiasm. I brought water to him, which he drank and then he peed on the cloth. This meant his organs were functioning. And he was climbing and walking now, ascending my fingers like a ladder. He sat on my wrist and held his cheese to munch like a squirrel would.

I let Reiki flow again through my hands and eyes. He climbed into the cupped palm of my right hand and buried his head for a few minutes. Then he found a comfortable spot to rest on my arm, bowing his head with his eyes remaining closed.

I began to see the pink slowly re-appearing in his face and in his feet and legs. Then he came towards me for some more climbing and playing with my fingers. A very nimble little mouse, now, he walked across to his water dish and hung onto the edge of it to drink.

Then he took off cavorting all over the desk, to the point that I thought if I didn't confine him, I'd lose him in the room somewhere. His eyes were fully opened and bright now.

I got the jar, putting it upright this time, and with the little guy inside, watched as he jumped to nearly clear the rim for escape. And he kept jumping! It was 5pm.

Miraculously, I didn't have to go to the vet to see if they would sell me something that would put him to rest. I was now planning his release into the garden.

He was tentative at first, as I lay the jar down in the grass and straw, for an easy exit.

He looked around, then left the safety of the jar for a pile of composting apples to snack on.

Then happily, he scurried away for shelter under some pieces of tin.

"I am grateful for the Healing Power of Reiki and surrender completely to its Loving Care and to the Source from which it comes."
